How to reduce the amount of data your camera uses

Sometimes the DOC AI Cam can use a lot of data. Typically it will be about 3GB/month for video and 1GB/month for audio.  This can increase significantly if there is a lot of movement in front of the camera. We have see more than 70GB used in a month.  If your SIM card runs out of data the camera will still store the videos locally and they can be retrieved using the Sidekick App, or by bringing the camera into WiFi reception.. You can, of course increase your data caps (check out our data rates). You can reconfigure your camera to use less data. The main things you can do to reduce data are.
  • Not record audio. It uses about 1GB/month
  • Point the camera down so it's not pointing at the sky or water.
  • Reduce the recording window. The default recording window (dusk to dawn) will use a lot less data than recording all day.
  • Mask out areas like sky or water to reduce the number of false positives as described here.
We are exploring the possibility of having the option of running the AI on the videos on the camera, deleting the false positives and only uploading those with animals. This would significantly reduce the data usage as well.
