Kōkako, bittern and dotterel now recognised

We've just updated our bird recognition algorithm to include kōkako, bittern and dotterels. Here is the full list of birds recognised.

Kōkako

Many thanks to Roger from Rotoehu Ecological Trust for sharing recordings of kōkako. We have used these to train the recognition algorithm. We've obviously only trained on North Island kōkako because the South Island ones are harder to find.  Maybe this will help find the elusive South Island kōkako.

Australasian Bittern/matuku-hūrepo

We have had a lot of people asking for us to add bittern. The camera can now recognise the low frequency booming of this globally endangered bird.

Dotterel/tūturiwhatu/pukunui

The dotterel is another threatened shorebird, particularly the Pukunui that is fighting for survival against cats on Rakiura.
