DOC AI Cam update: Support for faster Wi-Fi
We are just about to release a software update for the DOC AI Cam. This includes a number of bug fixes and support for faster Wi-Fi.
Update 25 Nov 2025: The bug fix portion of this has been released.
Support for faster Wi-Fi
One problem with offline DOC AI Cams occurs when there are a lot of recordings to download to your phone. It can sometimes take 40 minutes, or longer and often this isn't practical. The work around is to bring the camera back to a Wi-Fi, but this is also often not practical.
The Wi-Fi on the cameras is 2.4GHz. We realised we could add a 5GHz Wi-Fi dongle and significantly increase the Wi-Fi speed. Today's update adds support for this.
Adding the faster Wi-Fi dongle
To have the faster Wi-Fi you will need to send your camera back to us. We'll install it. For most cameras this will mean removing the modem. So the choice will be either faster Wi-Fi or a modem. There will be a small cost of $80 to upgrade the Wi-Fi.
In the future we plan to offer an option so you can have faster Wi-Fi and a modem, but this will require us to design and replace a PCB. We don't have a timeframe for when that might be available.
Bug fixes
This update includes a number of bug fixes to make the camera more reliable. This includes a change to ensure recordings are offloaded more consistently and fixes a memory error that would cause the camera to slow down when there were lots of recordings.
This also fixed a bug where the custom recording windows didn't work correctly outside of New Zealand.
As part of this we have also released an updated version of Sidekick.
